Honolulu Ocean Safety Department celebrates addition of 13 new lifeguards

‘EWA BEACH, O’AHU — The Honolulu Ocean Safety Department proudly announces the graduation of 13 new lifeguards from its latest recruit class, marking a significant milestone in strengthening public safety along Oʻahu’s world-renowned shorelines.

After successfully completing an intensive and comprehensive training program, the new lifeguards are now prepared to serve our communities. The program included rigorous instruction in ocean rescue techniques, emergency medical response, physical conditioning, and hazard recognition in Hawaiʻi’s dynamic coastal environments.

The addition of these 13 lifeguards enhances the department’s ongoing mission to promote ocean safety through prevention, education, and rapid emergency response. Honolulu’s lifeguards are widely recognized for their professionalism and are among the most active ocean rescue teams in the world.

“Today’s graduation isn’t just the end of their training course, it’s the beginning of their biggest responsibility and the best job they’ll ever have,” said Training Lieutenant Eugene Teixeira. “I told them to take these 3 things with you: 1) Treat your tower like your house; 2) Treat your beach patrons like your family; and 3) Watch the water.”

Family members, friends, and department personnel gathered earlier Wednesday at the Bird of Paradise Restaurant in ʻEwa Beach to celebrate the recruits’ achievements and honor their transition into active duty. Each graduate now joins the front lines of ocean safety, where vigilance and quick action are essential.
