City to resume normal operations Wednesday following Hurricane Lowell
HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu will resume normal government operations on Wednesday, September 9, following Tuesday’s closure of non-essential City offices and services due to Hurricane Lowell.
Mayor Rick Blangiardi decided to reopen City offices and resume normal services as the threat from Lowell moves away from Oʻahu and conditions across the island continue to improve.
“We made the decision to close City government Tuesday because the safety of our employees and the public had to come first, and it was the right decision,” said Mayor Blangiardi. “Now, with Lowell moving away and conditions improving, we are ready to get back to work Wednesday and resume serving the people of Oʻahu. I am incredibly grateful to our first responders, emergency personnel, and City employees who worked throughout the storm to keep our island safe. Their preparation, professionalism, and commitment made a tremendous difference.”
City employees should report to work as normally scheduled Wednesday unless their departments or agencies direct otherwise.
City facilities and services Wednesday
City offices, facilities and services will return to normal operations Wednesday, including:
- Parks and recreation: City parks, recreation facilities and botanical gardens will resume normal operations. Some individual facilities or areas may remain closed as crews address storm-related impacts.
- Municipal golf courses: All six City municipal golf courses will reopen and resume normal operations.
- Honolulu Zoo: The Honolulu Zoo will reopen and resume normal operations.
- Satellite City Halls and Driver Licensing Centers: Locations will reopen and resume normal operations.
- Public transportation: TheBus, Skyline and TheHandi-Van will operate on their normal schedules. Riders should be aware that localized road conditions could cause detours or delays.
- Refuse: Residential refuse collection and other refuse services will operate as scheduled.
- Public safety: Police, fire, emergency medical services, Ocean Safety, and other critical City services will continue normal operations.
The City will continue to monitor conditions and address any remaining impacts from Hurricane Lowell.
