Honolulu EMS blesses New Kaimukī Station, expanding emergency medical coverage in East Honolulu

The Honolulu Emergency Medical Services (EMS) today held a blessing for its new Kaimukī ambulance station, expanding 24-hour emergency medical coverage in Kaimukī and surrounding communities.
Located at 3650 Waialae Avenue in the Civil Beat Plaza Building, the new station is strategically positioned between Honolulu EMS’s Pawa‘a One unit, near the Honolulu Zoo, and the Wailupe station. The Kaimukī unit provides coverage for Kaimukī, Pālolo Valley and Kāhala, while also serving as a backup resource for East Oʻahu, Waikīkī and Mōʻiliʻili when additional coverage is needed.
“Kaimukī is home to a vibrant mix of restaurants, shops, families and kūpuna,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “EMS needed a presence in this neighborhood, and I’m encouraged by the Department’s growth and commitment to expanding services to meet the community’s needs.”
The Kaimukī ambulance operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is designed to strengthen coverage in an area that has experienced growing demand for emergency medical services. The additional unit also provides greater flexibility for Honolulu EMS to respond to emergencies in neighboring communities when area ambulances are responding to simultaneous 911 calls.
Since beginning operations on October 4, the Kaimukī ambulance has responded to more than 200 911 calls and provided emergency medical care to more than 100 patients who were transported to emergency rooms.
The station includes two crew resting rooms, a dining area and kitchen, bathrooms and showers, providing Honolulu EMS personnel with a dedicated facility to support their 24-hour operations.
“This new station strengthens our ability to provide timely emergency medical treatment to residents and visitors in Kaimukī and surrounding communities,” said Honolulu Emergency Services Director Jim Ireland. “Having an EMS unit stationed in this increasingly popular area around the clock gives our operations another important resource to respond quickly when people need emergency medical care.”
Kahu Brutus LaBenz provided the traditional oli during today’s blessing ceremony, which brought together Mayor Blangiardi, area representatives and Honolulu EMS personnel to mark the opening of the new facility. The Kaimukī station marks Honolulu EMS’s 24th ambulance station, with the Department set to announce the opening of its 25th station next week, another step in its continued effort to strengthen emergency medical response across Oʻahu.
